Afvallen dankzij de crosstrainer

Losing weight with a cross trainer

It probably sounds familiar: you want to lose weight, but after a long day at work, you don't feel like going to the gym. Until today! You packed your bags in the morning because you're going straight to the gym after work. Upon entering, you quickly walk to the only available machine – the crosstrainer – and enthusiastically begin your workout. However, after 10 minutes, you realize why you don't go more often: you don't know how to train effectively, and it quickly becomes boring. As a result, you stop immediately and go home feeling unsatisfied.

If you want to lose weight, you need to exercise, so make your workouts fun and functional. This way, you'll stick with it longer. Want to know how? Then read on.

Burning fat on the elliptical trainer

Training on the elliptical trainer is very good for fat burning, as you burn 8 to 12 calories per minute. This is because your heart rate quickly enters the fat-burning zone. To stay in this fat-burning zone, you need to ensure your heart rate is neither too low nor too high. Use this calculation: 220 minus your current age is your maximum heart rate. For example: if you are 40 years old, your maximum heart rate is 180.

  • 180 x 0.6 (60%) = 108. This is the lower limit of your fat-burning zone.
  • 180 x 0.75 (75%) = 135. This is the upper limit of your fat-burning zone.

To train truly functionally, in addition to these figures, you also need a training schedule. With a schedule, you have guidance and know for sure that you are training well.

Effective elliptical trainer workout schedule

Follow a schedule that is easy to follow, so you see results quickly and stick with it. Vary the intensity and movements regularly to keep it fun.

Can you only use the elliptical trainer for cardio?

While training on an elliptical trainer, you move in different ways: pedaling forwards and backward or intermittently holding the handles. Pedaling forward strengthens your quadriceps, pedaling backward your hamstrings. When holding the handles, you primarily train your arms, back, and shoulders; if you let go of the handles, you train your core. This way, you combine cardio and strength training. Do you have an elliptical trainer at home? Then you can easily train at home and don't have to go to the gym every time.

This is important when purchasing an elliptical trainer

When purchasing an elliptical trainer, pay special attention to the frame and the flywheel: they must be strong and of good quality. There must be sufficient resistance levels to follow your training schedule. Adjustable pedals ensure the best comfort, especially if you are taller. Don't forget the warranty conditions: it's nice to have 2 or 3 years of warranty and home service in case of a defect.
