When you ask people for their interpretation of yoga, you often hear: "People twist their bodies into the shape of a pretzel while chanting and sitting still like a statue." But is that really what yoga is all about? In this blog, we explain what yoga is, covering its do's and don'ts.
What is yoga
Yoga is a system that brings your body, thoughts, and mind into harmony. Ultimately, this leads to inner peace and happiness. Yoga poses strengthen the hormonal system and help to better regulate emotions through concentration and relaxation. The ability to maintain a relaxed balance also has a significant psychological effect. Yoga practitioners, also called yogis, gradually learn to maintain their psychological balance and thus preserve perfect calm, regardless of their environment. Yoga is seen as the way to achieve the highest goal in life. To reap these benefits, you need to know the basic do's and don'ts!
Yoga: The Do's
- Hydrate throughout the day: Drink plenty of water spread throughout the day. Do not drink right before your yoga session, as this will prevent a full bladder that distracts. Drinking water during the class itself is not recommended, as it cools down the built-up inner heat.
- Dress comfortably: Wear comfortable, breathable, and stretchy clothing that does not restrict your movements. For gentle classes like Hatha or Yin, loose and light clothing is sufficient. For dynamic classes like Vinyasa or Ashtanga, it's best to choose leggings and a fitted top or sports bra.
- Close your eyes during yoga: You will notice how pleasant it is to close your eyes during yoga and truly be in the moment. This way, you enjoy the pose, the breathing, and the peace more.
- Yoga on an empty stomach: Preferably practice yoga on an empty stomach. On a full stomach, you are more likely to experience cramps, nausea, or even vomiting, especially with forward bends, twists, or inverted poses. Do not eat anything up to 2 hours beforehand, unless you are truly hungry, then have a light snack.
- Practice yoga barefoot: Bare feet provide better grip on the yoga mat and reduce the risk of slipping and injuries. Additionally, you feel more grounded without shoes or socks. Preferably use your own yoga mat.
Yoga: The Don'ts
- Don't skip Savasana: Savasana, also known as Corpse Pose, seems simple, but for many, it is difficult to lie completely still. Nevertheless, it is an essential moment to relax and allow your body to fully unwind after class.
- Don't use your phone: Give yourself the chance to completely disconnect from the outside world for a while. Turn off your phone or put it on silent, and place it out of reach so you don't get distracted.
- Avoid hand cream and perfume: Hand cream can cause you to slip on your yoga mat. Always start your yoga session fresh and without perfume. During yoga, the body is cleansed, and strong perfume can disrupt breathing.
- Don't shower immediately after yoga: Preferably take a cold or lukewarm shower before the yoga session; this acts as hydrotherapy and prepares your body and mind. After the practice, it's best to let your body cool down naturally for 30 minutes before showering.
Extra tip: Consider purchasing your own yoga accessories. Although yoga studios usually provide the necessary equipment, it is definitely worthwhile to buy your own mat, blocks, or straps. This way, you can always practice yoga at home with equipment that suits you.
