What is elastic resistance?
Elastic resistance, also known as elastomer, uses elastic bands or cords on a rowing machine to create resistance during the rowing motion. These elastic bands can be set to different levels, depending on your preference and training goals. While rowing, you pull the resistance cord in and out of the device.
The advantages
- Inexpensive. Rowing machines with elastic resistance are usually the cheapest due to their simple operation. Only a resistance cord is needed.
- Quiet. The elastic resistance system makes hardly any noise, ideal for training whenever you want without disturbing others. Unlike water and air resistance, which generate relatively more noise.
- Smooth motion. The resistance cord stretches during the rowing stroke and springs back when you bring your arms back. This ensures a smooth rowing motion without dead spots, with low impact and less strain.
The disadvantages
- Few or no resistance levels. The choice of different resistance levels is limited, and the system is not suitable for heavy training; the maximum resistance is lower than with other systems.
- No realistic feel. Compared to a rowing machine with water resistance, elastic resistance does not offer a realistic rowing feel.
Trainers with elastic resistance are generally more suitable for beginners and recreational users, as they offer fewer resistance levels and training programs. They are particularly popular due to their low price.
