Wat is de HYROX en wat maakt het zo'n trend?

What is HYROX and what makes it such a trend?

HYROX has quickly become a well-known name in the world of functional fitness. Everywhere you look, people are preparing for this unique race, and interest is growing in Belgium too. But what exactly is HYROX, and why are more and more athletes choosing to participate? In this blog, we'll tell you everything you need to know and give you tips on how you can participate in a HYROX.

The rise of HYROX: a brief history

HYROX has existed since 2017 and was founded in Germany by Christian Toetzke, a veteran in the world of endurance events, along with co-founder Moritz Furste, a former Olympic hockey champion. Their mission? To create a new form of fitness competition that is accessible to everyone, from recreational athletes to professional athletes.

The first edition of HYROX took place in Hamburg and immediately attracted hundreds of participants. Other cities in Germany quickly followed, and later internationally, including London, Amsterdam, New York, and Madrid. In a short time, HYROX grew into a global competition, with its own world championship, thousands of participants per event, and a wide audience.

HYROX: a combination of running and functional fitness

HYROX is a global fitness race that combines running with functional strength training. What makes it special? It's not just a competition for truly professional athletes; the format is designed for athletes of all levels. Whether you train regularly or are just starting out with fitness, HYROX is both accessible and challenging at the same time.

During a HYROX race, each participant completes a fixed course: eight times 1 kilometer of running, interspersed with the following eight functional exercises:

  • 1000 meter SkiErg
  • 50 meter Sled Push
  • 50 meter Sled Pull
  • 80 meter Burpee Broad Jumps
  • 1000 meter Rowing
  • 200 meter Farmers Carry
  • 100 meter Sandbag Lunges
  • 100 Wall Balls

Everything takes place indoors, in a large hall, so that every competition in the world is exactly the same. This makes the fitness competition extra fair and measurable.

Why HYROX is such a big trend

The popularity of HYROX is no coincidence. It's the perfect mix of competition and personal development. Here are a few reasons why this sport is growing so fast:

  • It's measurable: your performance is recorded and compared with others worldwide.
  • You don't have to be a top athlete: a HYROX is designed so that everyone can participate at their own level.
  • You train all-round: strength, cardio, and endurance are all challenged simultaneously.
  • It feels like a real achievement: reaching the finish line is a huge motivational boost for many.

And all of this in a professional, indoor setting with a great atmosphere and support from the audience.

How to prepare for HYROX

Good preparation is crucial for successful HYROX participation. Because HYROX tests both strength and endurance, a balanced training approach is essential. Alternate running sessions with functional strength training, focusing on the eight fixed components of HYROX, such as wall balls, sled push, and burpee broad jumps.

During your workout, preferably work in circuits, so your body gets used to switching between cardio and strength. Also, work on your technique and mobility to prevent injuries.

Tip: nutrition, rest, and recovery are just as important as your workouts!

What equipment do you need?

A HYROX training requires a combination of strength and conditioning. Training with the right equipment is therefore very important. But what equipment do you need?

  • Treadmills for endurance training
  • Kettlebells and sandbags for functional strength
  • Wall balls and sleds to simulate competition situations
  • Elliptical trainers or air bikes for intensive interval training

At Fitwinkel, you'll find a wide range of training materials to help you prepare optimally. Do you want to train like in the real race? Then choose the official HYROX gear, developed in collaboration with Centr.

A challenging fitness competition for athletes of all levels

What makes HYROX truly special is that it seems simple, but is far from easy. It challenges you physically and mentally. During HYROX, you don't have to climb obstacles or do difficult CrossFit movements. It's about perseverance, rhythm, and smart training. It is also accessible to athletes of all levels thanks to the different participation categories.

Participation categories at HYROX

Whether you've just started training or have been an avid athlete for years, there's always a participation category that suits you. Below are the different categories:

HYROX Open

The Open category is ideal for athletes who want to experience their first HYROX. It's challenging, but accessible. You complete the full course, consisting of eight functional workouts and eight 1km runs, but with lighter weights and fewer repetitions than in the Pro category. Perfect if you want to test yourself and have fun at the same time.

HYROX Pro

For seasoned athletes, there's HYROX Pro. In this category, the weights are higher, and more is demanded of your strength and endurance. This is the ideal choice for serious athletes who want to measure their performance against other top participants.

HYROX Doubles

Together you are stronger. In HYROX Doubles, you participate in pairs: male/male, female/female, or mixed. You each still run the 8 kilometers (divided over 8 runs), but you can complete the workouts together. This category combines teamwork with competition and is a fun way to participate with a training buddy or partner.

HYROX Relay

The HYROX Relay is the ultimate team-building challenge. Teams of four people divide the work: each team member runs 2 x 1 kilometer and does two of the eight workouts. This makes it ideal for colleagues, groups of friends, or sports teams who want to work together in a playful, yet challenging way.
