Last Thursday, we ran a poll on our Facebook page and Instagram Story: what do you prefer, strength training with free weights or strength training with machines?
Most of you chose strength training with free weights, but is this always the best choice? Ultimately, what works best for you is always right. There's no right or wrong answer; it depends on your experience and personal preference. For beginners, it's sometimes recommended to start with strength machines, while advanced users often opt for free weights. Both choices have their own advantages and disadvantages.
Advantages of Strength Machines vs. Disadvantages of Free Weights
Easier vs. Harder
Training with machines is almost impossible to do wrong, as they can usually only be used in one way and often come with an instruction card. This reduces the risk of injury. With free weights, such as dumbbells, correct technique and posture are important. Incorrect execution significantly increases the risk of injury.
Spotter vs. No Spotter
Strength machines provide support, for example, if you want to learn new exercises. You don't need a spotter, even when training with heavy weights. However, if you train with free barbells, such as during bench presses, a spotter is advisable.
Time-saving vs. Time-consuming
With strength machines, you hardly need to prepare anything, and you can adjust the weight in seconds. With free weights, this often takes more time because you have to find and set up weights.
Advantages of Free Weights vs. Disadvantages of Strength Machines
Versatile vs. One-sided
With just a few free dumbbells, you can perform countless different exercises and train almost every muscle group. Machines usually focus on only one or a few muscle groups. Home gyms are an exception to this as they allow you to train almost everything.
Natural Movement vs. Unnatural Movement
With dumbbells, you determine the range of motion yourself, training your coordination and natural movements – something that is also useful in daily life. With strength machines, you follow the movement of the machine, which often makes it less natural.
Ability to Train Every Muscle vs. Limited Options
With dumbbells, you can move in any direction and even target the smallest muscles. Strength machines typically focus on one movement, meaning you don't train all muscles equally well.
Conclusion: Free Weights or Strength Machines?
Strength machines are convenient, time-saving, and ideal for safely building strength without a spotter. Free weights offer more versatility, more natural movement, and support better coordination. Above all, choose what best suits your level and goals.
