Ligfiets kopen? Waar let ik op?

Buying a recumbent bike? What should I look for?

Slowly but surely, the recumbent bike is gaining more ground in the fitness world and in physiotherapy practices. The recumbent bike elevates fitness to a higher level thanks to new technologies, intuitive operation, and special programs. When buying a recumbent bike, it is important to pay attention to a few specifications. We are happy to list them for you!

1. Flywheel of the recumbent bike

The flywheel is the most important part of the recumbent bike. This is a weighted wheel that is set in motion by pedaling. The flywheel not only ensures that you can pedal smoothly, but also determines the resistance and the smoothness of the pedaling motion. A heavier flywheel provides more counterweight during the downward movement, allowing for a fluid, circular motion. In short: the heavier the flywheel, the smoother the pedaling feels.

2. Type of resistance system

The resistance of a recumbent bike can be regulated via a magnet or an electromagnet. The difference in quality is often noticeable in the smoothness of the pedaling motion. High-quality resistance systems offer a smoother feel than cheaper systems. With a magnet, the resistance increases as the magnet gets closer to the wheel. An electromagnetic system regulates the resistance electrically, which can be adjusted more precisely and accurately. The downside: recumbent bikes with an electromagnetic resistance system are usually more expensive.

3. Adjusting the resistance

If you want to train for a longer period on the recumbent bike, choose a device where the resistance can be adjusted automatically. With a manual resistance system (with a rotary knob), you have to interrupt your workout to increase or decrease the resistance, which is less comfortable and can affect your results. With pre-set training programs, you train without interruption and achieve your goals faster.

4. Weight of the recumbent bike

Recumbent bikes are generally more stable than exercise bikes because your body weight is distributed over a larger surface area. However, the total weight of the recumbent bike is also important: the heavier the device, the more stable it is in use. A higher weight reduces the risk of accidents when getting on and off.

5. Adjustability of the recumbent bike

Do you want to use the recumbent bike with multiple people? Then choose a model with an adjustable saddle. On most recumbent bikes, you can adjust the seat height and sometimes also the handlebars, both horizontally and vertically. This way you always create a comfortable posture and reduce the chance of injuries. Also check whether the recumbent bike can be leveled, so that you always train stably.
