Foosball is a game full of precision and strategy, where clear rules ensure a pleasant atmosphere and smooth matches. Below, we list the most important foosball rules for you.

Winning a match

The team that scores 5 goals first wins a set. Often, you agree beforehand how many goals are needed to win or how long a match lasts.

Rules

Start of the game:
The match begins with a discussion about who takes the kick-off, the choice of side, and taking positions. Everyone must agree before starting.

Bringing the ball into play:
At kick-off, the ball is placed under the middle player of the 5-rod (rod with five players). The ball is briefly played to the opponent and then back, as a sign that both parties are ready to start.

Possession and dead ball:
Whoever has the ball controls it. If the ball is stationary and unreachable ('dead ball'), play is resumed depending on the situation. Between the 5-rods, a new kick-off follows; behind the 5-rod, the nearest goalkeeper gets the ball.

Ball out of play:
If the ball goes out of play, it goes to the opponent, and play resumes with the other team's goalkeeper.

Goals:
A goal only counts if the ball has fully crossed the goal line.

Spinning:
Spinning the rod is allowed a maximum of 360 degrees.

Contact and fouls:
There are rules about contact between the ball, rods, and the wall to keep the game fair. In case of a foul, the game is briefly paused for proper handling.

Changing players:
Changing positions is only allowed between sets.

Time limit:
On the 5-rod, there is a maximum of 10 seconds of ball possession; on the other rods, it's 15 seconds.

Hindrance:
Hindrance such as moving the table, pulling rods, or blowing is not allowed.

Time-out:
Each team may request two time-outs during the match, only when they have ball possession.

Penalties

The first two fouls mean the opponent gets the ball at the 5-rod. A third foul results in a penalty from the spot, taken by a player from the 3-rod.
